Cult of the Serpent
The Cult of the Serpent was a secretive organization that had woven its influence throughout the fabric of Elossis and beyond. With a history shrouded in mystery and dark ambition, the cult venerated old gods whose identities remain elusive, drawing power from forgotten rituals and arcane knowledge.
History
War of the Serpent
About 300 years ago, the cult initiated a massive war under the leadership of a figure known as the Chosen One, aiming to reactivate an ancient obelisk of power. The purpose and potential of this obelisk are unknown, as the cult's efforts were ultimately thwarted, leaving the obelisk dormant. The Chosen One was known to ride a majestic mount—a gryphon named Wings of Amber. This detail symbolizes the cult's connection to powerful, mythic creatures and possibly hints at their reach into the realms beyond the mundane.
The war saw the cult's forces clashed with an alliance of factions who resisted the onslaught. The skies rained shadows as the Chosen One showcased unimaginable power during of the Battle of the Blood Moons. Despite the cult's massive surge of power, it was eventually defeated, with the surviving cult members dispersing into the shadows and being hunted one by one.
Re-emergence of the cult
During the latter half of the 22nd century the cult experienced a re-emergence from the shadows, being prevalent in the city of Sagemont where its influence managed to bring many of the nobles and officials to its side.
Beliefs and Worship
It is believed that the cult's worship centers around ancient deities, the specifics of which remain a mystery. This worship likely involves rituals and offerings designed to curry favor or harness divine power for their own ends.
Trial of the Forgotten Relics
During their re-emergence in Sagemont the cult had successfully infiltrated the upper echelons of Sagemont's society, corrupting nobles and officials to ensure their operations remain protected from scrutiny. Personal letters sent to select citizens of Sagemont suggest a targeted approach to recruitment, focusing on individuals who may be susceptible to the cult's allure or who possess the potential to further their goals.
The Golden Gryphon Tavern, once a lively hub for the cult's activities, was destroyed during a fire, erasing much of the cult's evidence in the city.
Current Leads
- The Starhaven family: Notably involved with the cult, the Starhaven family represents a significant lead, suggesting that the cult's influence extends deeply into Sagemont's noble class.
- Inspector Flint Bramblethorn's Investigation: Flint's suspension following General Fenlee's arrest underlines the cult's capacity to manipulate legal and military efforts against them. Flint's association with Elara Mistral of the Enchanted Chalice Tavern could imply a network of allies working discreetly against the cult.
- Sanctum beneath the city: The existence of a hidden sanctum beneath the city points to the cult's preference for concealed places of power, although the entrance remains undiscovered.
- Artifacts of power: The cult seeks ancient artifacts that are part of an unknown ritual that seeks to bring about the glory of their main deity, called by them "The Redeemer".
